E-Mail FAQ |
Introduction
We utilise a sophisticated PowerMail mailing system. In addition to being able to have
nearly unlimited autoresponders by simply adding text files to a directory, you can also
redirect mail for everyone in your domain by simply modifying a text file. PowerMail is
not set up automatically for new accounts, but you may do this at http://www.helpbot.com You will then be able to take
advantage of the features below.
Redirecting mail
Make a text (upload in ASCII or text mode) file in your home directory named .redirect
that says:
eric
73452.452@compuserve.com
susan susan.simpson@mci.com
kim
goddess@afterlife.com
hellllp 73452.452@compuserve.com
root@instant-answers.net
default crazy@bob.com
This would redirect mail for eric@yourdomain.com to
73452.452@compuserve.com, etc. Mail for defined userids in your domain (that is, userids
who can login to your domain) should be routed with .forwarding. See section 1.3.
Mail to a user that was not in this list would be sent to
the default user, crazy@bob.com. You are encouraged to have a default entry, if just to be
sure you don't lose mail due to any other mistakes.
Autoresponders
Create a file in your home directory (being /usr/home/username) named info
which says:
"Thankyou for requesting information from our
autoresponder."
Mail to info@yourdomain.com will return the message above.
Autoresponder files should not have upper case letters in
them. Incoming mail addresses are normalized to lower case before the autoresponder
directory(ies) is searched. They also should not have an extension, ie the file should be
called "info" not "info.txt".
To cause the autoresponder to send a response, and also
send a copy of the
original message to you, you would need to use a .redirect alias,
in this manner:
autoresponder address: info@mydomain.com
autoresponder name: mybot
your address: myid@mydomain.com
Create the autoresponder, mybot.txt, as described above.
In your .redirect file, make an entry:
info mybot@mydomain.com,myid
Mail sent to info@mydomain.com will then cause a copy of mybot
to be returned to sender, and a copy of the original message to
be sent to myid@mydomain.com.
Setting Up
Your Mail Software
The incoming (POP) mail server name should be set to mail.yourdomain.com
The outgoing (SMTP) mail server should be set to the SMTP server of your dial-up ISP. We
can't allow sending of mail through our servers, as we risk being isolated by the backbone
providers who don't want spam sent through their networks. This allows us to maintain many
diverse connections which allows for high-speed website access.
